Some people probably wouldn't pay attention to the words they say and are often being misled into thinking that freedom of speech entitles them to speak their mind, although unintelligently at times.
It's becoming a more common trend to blame the media for western influences instead of the rapid rate of globalisation and Singapore's desire to surface as one of the top countries in the world. As we open up ourselves to different cultures and traditions, it's becoming more of a challenge to preserve the Asian moral values we willingly uphold which we think is ideal, based on standards we came up with ourselves.
What's worse is when the society thinks they have the issue on western influences under control by coming up with public education campaigns and talks to educate the youth who are more prone to the unhealthy influences.
Well what do we know when it comes to foreign cultures and traditions ?
Trends, habits, phenomenon, pop-culture, you name it, activities such as premarital-sex, mutilation and eating disorders which have been popularized in western cultures seem harmful and damaging to the conservative Asian society. We have never accepted individuals who live by western values and often think that such people bring about instability to the well balanced and conservative Asian culture.
In our attempt to reclaim those we've lost to the western culture, we've extended our reach to retain the conservative Asian culture which based on our judgments are ideal and "right".
So much for a conservative society, our approach on such matters have always been direct, immature and seem more like an opportunity for hardcore Pro-Asian Values individuals to conduct personal attacks and display their dislike for western cultures and the people who adopted it.
We seldom realise how we talk to people out of unhealthy practices out of fear that their actions may poison the society and not harm themselves. To be conservative does not require us to weed out the few anomalies and discard them but rather to approach such situations cautiously and to ensure that the society as a whole is resistant to change instead of working in favour for the like-minded majority.
Compare the influences with Asian practices such as smoking Opium, gambling and drinking. Even though drink driving kills more than self mutilation or people suffering from eating disorders, we were never that hardcore when tackling our own fair share of bad Asian practices.
What's worse is that we handle such matters as though we have perfect knowledge of the entire depth of the situation. We preach Asian youths to embrace a conservative lifestyle without understanding their situation. It's even more contradictory that we require our youths to change into a state which they are reluctant to accept changes.
Like how talks on Sex Education are held in such a way that we should not regret the probability of being HIV positive instead of acting responsibly with consideration to your partner's life and possibly, your child's life. Rather than the conventional method to drill the idea of abstinence into youths.
Or how self-mutilation and eating disorders are shunned at as they are entirely new practices. We try to talk them out of it instead of understanding them or taking them back into a part of the society. We are discarding those we accuse of defecting from our "ideal" culture and traditions without offering them help.
At the end of the day, no matter how much we try to impress the world with how solid our conservative Asian values are, how deep the roots of our traditions and culture travel within us, we end up exposing the true level of maturity and how shallow we Asians are.
Even though we try steer clear from western influences, we can no longer run away from the fact that "freedom of speech" which has been popularized in western cultures has in fact been adopted in our own Asian society to cover up for the lack of thought for everything that we speak.
